Introduced in 1985, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL was released as a flagship sedan with a long wheelbase. The S-Class had gained massive traction worldwide at that point, in the middle of its second generation of production. The 560 SEL was sold alongside the 560 SEC coupe, and both models promised buyers the highest level of luxury possible from a Mercedes car. They certainly lived up to their hype, since from 1987 to 1990, Mercedes received the highest customer ratings in the JD Power Sales Satisfaction Index. The second generation of the S-Class also represented Mercedes-Benz at its peak, producing over 890,000 S-Class vehicles.
The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL was sold until the 1991 model year, one of the last releases before the company dropped the SE/SEL/SEC names for a new nomenclature. It was powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine that produces 238 hp and 287 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic transmission were both standard for the long-wheelbase flagship sedan.

In 1991, Mercedes-Benz introduced a traction control system known as acceleration slip regulation (ASR) that was first featured on the 560 SEL and 560 SEC. The company’s latest hydropneumatic suspension called HPF III was also built into the 560 SEL, allowing the driver to raise the car by 35 mm when traveling on coarse road surfaces. Soft leather seats were also standard, and either a Burlwood or Zebrano wood trim for the interior.
